Amazement Square (A Father's Day Tale)

Dear Amazement Square People,
you broke a million hearts on Father's Day.
My daughter and I are both graduate students, new to the Lynchburg area. On Father's Day, we explored the downtown area, stopping at the Amazement Square courtyard to open our laptops.
As we enjoyed doing a little research, cars pulled into the lot one after the other, loaded with children filled with great expectations.

Each group took five to ten minutes to disembark from automobiles, finally making their way up the sidewalk. Shortly after, each group returned, filled with disappointment. The parents all allowed their children to express their discontent. One child expressed herself with screams and refused to be comforted by an alternative of ice cream or a
movie; another child hugged a tree. Her mother asked if she were O.K. and patted her on the back.
Being on the adult side of the fence, I thought to myself, "Well, wonderful! The Amazement Square people get to have a day off.
Aren't there a million other places these people can go in this place?"
I tried to remember what I would have felt like as a child in their positions... I couldn't remember...
So, I tried to remember what my daughter would have felt like...
It would have been a bad moment that could have wreaked havoc on the entire outing.
Thinking of my daughter's childhood reminded me of the POV of those tiny tots. Maybe you Amazement Square people can make it up to them with a Blow Pop lollipop or something the next time they visit.
In the meantime, I hope you all had a wonderful day off. To all you fathers, I'm glad you had time off to be with your wonderful
children.

I thought about how I was always the one to support everyone else, but when I needed support myself, no one was there. I thought about my grandmother before she started forgetting. I thought about my last summer before college, and my parents, and remembering what being carefree felt like.
I hugged my knees to my chest and looked at the moon rising over the ocean. Another day would come in a few hours and I couldn't fight back the feeling that I wasn't ready for it. I had nothing to look forward to anymore and I couldn't keep comforting other people when I couldn't be comforted myself. I lived an endless roller coaster and no one was at the controls to stop it.
Soon I felt myself crying softly and I rubbed my eyes with the sleeves of my sweatshirt. The tears ran down my nose and onto my lips, tasting like salt. I tried remembering the last time I had actually cried, but I couldn't. I kept everything inside for too long and by then I was ready to burst, much like right now.
