Using Non-Fiction in Fiction works

I am an amateur writer, and was interested in a particular aspect of writing fiction. Is it possible to use non-fiction elements (Such as a cultural element of modern day society, and use it as a jumping off point, or foundation for a fictional work?

For instance, if I wanted to use a real-world theory that actually exists (the theory of the existence of "Indigo Children"...and utilize it as a foundation for a fictional piece, is this acceptable?

Would I have to change the terminology (ie: "Indigo Children") to something else, or can I use the term straight out?

Hi dumavena,

By all means, wrapping your fiction around reality adds believability and plausibility to your story. The more you can salt and pepper your work with real facts, the more you can entertain and inform your reader. As a reader, I want to not only be taken to a place I might not have been before, but I want to learn something along the journey with each book I read.

Good luck with your book.
