CHAPTER 1
Soft voices came from within the gently swirling mist.
"It is time for The One to be born again. The Others have grown strong again."
"Do you think now is the right time?”
"I think we should wait another couple of years before we set things in motion.”
”No, he is right. If we wait any longer, they will never be together.”
”That will be the end before the fight even begins.”
”So who is she going to?”
”Make the wrong choice and doom us all.”
”I know who she will go to. That couple, it is their time.”
”Their strength in magic will help.”
”And later he will be there to help The One.”
”Yes. Is he ready for her to arrive?”
”He will be there; he is ready now.”
”Are you sure?”
”I have been watching him; it is time.”
”Better do it now, she is about to give birth.” They all lifted their hands and released The One back to the people.
”You know The One is stronger than ever?”
”I think that is what is going to be needed this time, my friend.”
The mist returned to quiet. They had all been there so long they could feel the comfort of the quiet. Each cast their eyes down, watching The One being born. A short while later, another joined them in the mist.
”Will she be alright?” the new voice in the mist asked.
”She already has a new protector; they are connected.”
”Connected?” there was a soft murmur in the mist.
”Do you think we should have stopped that from happening?”
”No, we will not interfere in what they do.” There was a pause.
”Who made the connection?”
”Both.”
”At the same time?” Another murmur.
”All will be well.” The new one spent the next couple of years watching and waiting for her other half. After his arrival, the pair watched over The One.
The large bedroom was in almost total darkness, except for a single candle that burned gently. William lay in his bed; today was his tenth birthday. Now, at the other end of it, he wished this day had not happened. The only bright spot had been the birth of Angel. The first child of his parents’ best friends, Charles and Angelina Flowerdew.
He thought about her and a small smile appeared on his lips. He seemed to know from the moment she was put into his arms, he would do anything to protect her.
She had opened her eyes and looked up at him; there he found she had the greenest eyes he had ever seen looking back at him. The adults seemed to be surprised that her eyes were not blue like every other baby; he turned to them.
”Well, of course, they are not like all other babies’ eyes — she is special.” Touching her light-honey gold hair with his free hand, he was at a loss as to why they could not see the truth.
”William, could you take Angel out to the others, show her off for us?” His head came up in a hurry; something in his mother’s voice worried him.
”What’s wrong with Auntie Angelina?” Angelina smiled at him and called him over to her bed, holding his hand in hers. Her hand felt so cold.
”It will be all right, William, just keep an eye on my Angel for me.” he was then rushed out of the room.
In the downstairs room where the rest waited, he was allowed to take Angel from one to the next. She would open her eyes and look at every person she was paraded before. That was when he realised he could sense what she was feeling. So he knew when she liked someone, or wanted to be away from another. One of the ones she did not like was her own Uncle Ronald. When he showed Angel to him, he smiled an awful smile and said. “Yes! She will do just fine.” He went to reach out to her but she started crying. William could feel her instant dislike for this man. He removed her from the room, without looking back. William took her back upstairs to her mother’s room. He knocked and the door opened, but he was not allowed to enter. His mother came out; he could tell she had been crying.
”William, my dear, could you take Angel to her room, it’s just down the hall. The door with the rose carved into it. I will send the wet nurse in soon.” She was trying her best to contain herself in front of him.
”Mother, what has happened? I think Angel wants to see her mother.” He looked down and found her looking at him.
”I’m sorry, dear, but Angelina just died. Please take her to the other room.” he hurried to Angel’s room, sat in the chair and wept.
He would never see her again; a movement in his arms made him look down. It broke his heart that she should die and never know her own daughter. He looked into Angel’s eyes and felt a thread of a connection. He did not understand it, but did not even think of pulling back from it. He thought it was like something that they both needed.
”I promise that I will always be here for you. No one will hurt you while I am around.” He kissed her forehead as she stared up into his eyes. William did not understand how unusual this was, as he had never been around a baby this early in its life before. They both settled down and Angel fell asleep.
A woman sat in her dingy dining room with a short strand of hair wrapped around her little finger and mumbled. She was not very pretty, though she thought herself to be beautiful. Plain brown hair tied in a tight bun on top of her head, only a small amount around her neck fell in curls. A face full of freckles she hid under lots of powder. She felt the hair tremble then disappeared; she let a grin grow on her face.
”Is it done? About time, Deborah. Why did you let her see the child?” the man asked, sitting on the other side of the table while looking at the finger and hair. She just smiled at the man, and would not answer questions from the likes of him. .”Now you know what you are to do. He wants you in place before the year is out.”
